Mangochi Police Station Public Relations Officer Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi has confirmed of the arrest of 5 men indicating that the incidents occurred from Friday, September 29th to October 1, 2023 at Sunbird Nkopola.
She has identified the suspects as Edward Austin, 35, Cidreck Chilembwe, 23, Yusuf Stambuli, 26, Aaron Phiri, 24, and Yamikani Moffat, 25.
Daudi said: “It is alleged that these five individuals, who reside in Lilongwe, used a Blue Toyota Corolla Saloon and posed as guests at one of the resthouses within the township.”
She added that the suspects left their motor vehicle at the premises and commuted to the event with the sole intention of stealing cellphones.
Almost 20 cellphones were recovered in the room they had booked and they confessed to commiting the offence, and investigations are on-going to recover the remaining cellphones.
Meanwhile, Police in Mangochi have advised those who reported about their cellphones being stolen at the said event to visit the police station to identify and reclaim their property.
